Use the below method’s to change windows 7 password, change windows 8 password, and change windows 10 password even without knowing the current password.
Though you can create a password reset disk in Windows, but note that before you can successfully create the password reset disk, you must know the current windows password.
Countable methods are also available within the Windows operating system itself that allows you to change the windows user password.
Using most of this method still requires you to provide the current password, I think for security purposes.
So, therefore, these articles focus on how to change windows 7/8/10 computer password even when you don’t remember the current or old password.

Why changing your windows PC password
For so many reasons you may want to change your Windows computer password, but you don’t know the current one. If you are already logged into the Computer, then it is possible. Or Let’s assume you want to prank a friend.
And fortunately, your friend has already logged into his computer, and he allows you to use it. You can shock your friend by logging him out of his PC, without providing the current password.
You can manipulate any computer password if the computer is already logged in. Manipulation like:- changing or resetting the windows computer/PC password.
Though this can be quickly done with Command Prompt, However a lot of users are not familiar with Command Prompt.
Brief notes on resetting windows computer password
Enough third-party tools are available in the software market to reset windows password. Software like Kon-Boot can be used to bypass windows password entirely during login.
Another utility software like Offline Windows Password Editor can clear the password.
NB: The methods we will be discussing below will work on any local user accounts for Microsoft Windows XP. Windows Vista. Windows 7. Windows 8 &.1. And Windows 10.
The process will not work for users using Windows 8 and 8.1 and Windows 10 that are logged in with Microsoft mail account. If you want to change the password on the mail account, Raymondcc has something great here online forgotten password process.
NB: To gain success with any of the methods below,
i. you must either know the current password.
ii. Or you should be able to logon to one administrator account on the PC. for you to manipulate the password.
In case you don’t have the two options, then you can use one of the third-party programs listed above. Better still you can use the Command Prompt login method which we will include in the below list.
i. Change Windows Account Password with Command Prompt
And this same method is what most software uses underground to change the windows password. Just that the software’s provide you with friendly “GUI“, while command prompt makes you do the batch typing yourselves.
CMD trick becomes handy if you want to change a password on an account, but you’ve forgotten the old password.
Since going through the Control Panel may require confirmation of the current password. All you need to have is admin access to perform this change from the command prompt.
Follow the below step by step procedure.
i. Open Command Prompt with Administrator privilege.
There are many ways to open the command prompt in windows operating system. But here we will open it using Win + R shortcut key.
Just hold down the Windows key + R, and a box will appear.
Inside that box type, CMD then hit enter.
ii. Now you can easily use the “net user” command to change the PC Windows password easily, Even without providing the old/current password.
Type the below command an hit enter.
net user username newpass
Replace username with your Windows account username, and newpass with the new password you want.
In case you don’t know the username of the account you want to change its password. Then you can type “net user” without a quote into the command prompt.
Now all the user account in that computer will be displayed; then you can type the nested command like below.
net user username newpass
You will replace the username with any of the username attached to the computer which you want to change.
ii. Reset Windows Computer Password with PCunlocker
We already have a complete guide here on to reset Windows PC password using PCunlocker. The PCUnlocker is a bootable utility program which is capable of resetting any windows Pc user account password.
PCUnlocker programs work with all versions of Windows. It can be used to reset or change any windows password: either 7 or 8 or 10.
Follow the below guide to use PC unlocker.
i. The first thing you need to do is to get another PC to download the PCUnlocker software, which comes as a bootable CD image. You will now burn the ISO image file to a blank CD or USB drive using the ISO2Disc utility.
ii. Insert the newly burned CD or USB drive into your target computer, and set it to boot from CD/USB
iii. Now that you’ve booted into the CD/USB drive, you’ll be welcomed with the screen of PCUnlocker.
The PCUnlocker software will automatically search and locates the SAM database file for your installed Windows operating system.
It will now display to you all the list of local user accounts in your Computer/PC.
iv. Select any user account that you wish to reset or change the password and click on the Reset Password button. PCUnlocker will remove the old password at once.
Restart your computer and you can now log into your Windows PC user account without any password.
iii. Change PC Password From Computer Management
The windows operating system itself provides an amazing tool known as “Compmgmt.msc” meaning computer management.
It is extremely easy to change the windows PC password, without knowing the current or old one, directly from Computer Management.
Follow the below guide to use “Compmgmt.MSC” tool.
i. Open Computer Management.
There are tons of ways to do this in Windows OS. But Howtechwork will give You two out of the numerous method available.
Method 1. Hold Win + R shortcut key, a box will appear.
Inside that box type Compmgmt.MSC into the dialogue box, and hit enter.
Method 2. On your computer desktop, you will see the icon “My Computer” or “This PC”.
Right-click on any of these icons on your computer desktop; On the context menu that appears and clicks “Manage”.
ii. From the left-hand side, you should see an entry named Local Users and Groups.
iii. Expand it by clicking on it, you should see two folders with name USERS and the second folder name GROUP.
Click on the folder “Users”.
In the right window pane, you will be able to see all the user accounts on your computer.
iv. look for the user account that you wish to change the password and Right-click on it. On the context menu that appears, click on the Set password. See the below image:-
v. A warning message will appear, telling you what would happen if you change the password. Just ignore the message, then click on the Proceed button.
vi. A new modal window will appear, giving you the chance to set your new password.
Simply type the new password and confirm it by retyping it again in the next box.
After that hit the OK button.
You can either restart your Computer or just log off and log in again to confirm if the new password has been set.
iv. How to Reset User Password If You Can’t log in
In a situation whereby you are the only user on the computer, and you forget your login password. Then most of the methods above may not work since they require access to at least one administrator account.
The method am about to reveal to you will allow you to open a Command Prompt window at the login screen.
It enables you to remove or change the windows password ass well as adding and removing a user even before you logon.
Follow the below guide to reset windows 7/8/10 password.
ii. Boot your PC from the windows disk.
Immediately the Setup screen appears, press Shift+F10 on your computer keyboard to open Command Prompt.
You will need to know the letter of the drive where your Windows operating system is installed, which most of the time will likely be C drive.
To confirm, Type Dir C: to see if your Program Files, Users, and Windows folders will be listed.
If the Dir C: did not work, try Dir D: as well as ad Dir E: etc. Continue testing different letter, until you find the correct letter for your drive.
iii. Now that you’ve finally known the drive letter where your OS is installed.
I am assuming your OS drive letter is D:. In case yours is not D:, change the drive letter to the correct one you found above.
Then type the below commands.
Copy Sethc.exe Sethc.exe.bak
Copy Cmd.exe Sethc.exe
Press Y when asked to overwrite the file.
iv. Close the setup window behind Command Prompt.
Now click Yes or press Y to confirm and reboot back to Windows. At the Windows logon screen, you will be asked to provide a password.
Just press Shift key 5 times or Alt+Shift+Print Screen, this will bring up the Command Prompt.
v. Enter one of the net user commands listed above to change the password. For a list of users enter “net user” without arguments.
This below command will clear the password.
Now change the username to your Windows accounts username.
vi. Now all you have to do is click inside the password box; optionally you can type the new password if you created one and press Enter to log in.
vii. This last step below is optional (not necessary) but recommended. In case some external people have access to the computer.
Boot again to the Windows setup installation disk, and open a Command Prompt, By typing “Shift+F10”.
Then type the below command using the same drive letter you found in step 2.
Copy Sethc.exe.bak Sethc.exe
Press Y to confirm the overwrite and close the setup window to reboot.
Few notes about the windows installation disk method
The above command restores the original Sethc executable, so no-one else can cause problems by bringing up a Command Prompt during logon.
This method has been around for a very long time and has been working since Windows uses accessibility features at the login screen.
Pressing Shift 5 times pops up the Sticky Keys option, or Shift+Alt+Print Screen offers to enable High Contrast.
If you replace the accessibility shortcut keys launcher (Sethc.exe) with Cmd.exe, it will instead launch Command Prompt when you press those keys.
Since no one is logged in yet, so administrator privileges are not necessary here.
Important facts to keep in Mind
NB: Please understand that changing windows user password using any of these above methods should be a last resort.
Because forcing a password change in this way will render encrypted data like emails, files and internet passwords unreadable, Since the wrong password will now protect them.

Fix Windows 10 password with Isumsoft Password Refixer
This means you are completely locked out of your PC because you forget your current password. You can try to change Windows 10 password using a USB flash drive with the help of this tool.
Follow the steps listed below to use Isumsoft windows password refixer
i. Create a bootable USB flash drive
Using any available computer, try and download the “Windows Password Refixer” software. Install it, and double click the icon to launch the software.
Choose USB Device as the media type, and follow its screen instructions to burn it into a USB flash drive so that you can get a bootable USB drive.
ii. Boot your forgotten password PC from the USB drive
Insert the bootable USB flash drive into the computer’s USB port.
iii. Change Windows 10 password
Once the “Windows Password Refixer” screen appears, select the Windows 10.
Select the account whose password you want to change, and then click the “Reset Password” button.
iv. Click “Yes” to confirm that you want to change the windows password, so the user’s password will be changed to blank.
Now click the “Reboot” button, click “Yes” to confirm that you want to restart the computer.
Then quickly disconnect the Bootable USB flash drive once the computer restarts.
As it is now, you can now set up a new password if you wish. It’s as simple as that. you can sign in to Windows 10 without any password.
